I make hand felted textiles for interiors and to wear that engage the senses and invite touch. Fusing traditional and contemporary felting techniques with a range of textile processes, I work with sustainably sourced wool fibres, silk, velvets and wood to make table lamps, lampshades, cushions, rugs and scarves.
Driven by a desire to create texture and engage the senses, my work reflects my interest in haptic perception - our instinct to touch and it’s importance to our expereince of the world. To this end I take an experimental approach to the ancient craft of felt making, by exploring material combinations and textile processes, to build surfaces inspired by organic shapes and pattern. I make use of the wool’s ability to fuse with fabrics and retain shapes when felted to create hand made textiles with differing levels of textural complexity. I do this by manipulating the wool with stitch, fabrics and felting processes, achieving permanent shapes and patterns, which echo my sources of inspiration. In turn I use my hand felted textiles to create functional objects with surfaces to evoke feelings of warmth and comfort, invite touch and challenge the perception of felt.
Sustainable craftsmanship is a cornerstone of my practice. I aim to be a responsible maker using environmentally friendly, high quality natural materials. I individually design and hand craft each piece of felt from wool, silk and wood sourced from environmentally responsible suppliers and farms. I use wool sourced from farms with animal friendly husbandry and where I am assured no museling takes place. My wood is sourced from a local woodland in collaboration with a woodsman who uses traditional coppicing methods to encourage biodiversity. To minimise waste and curb over production I make to order and create limited edition collections. I work from my garden studio in South Birmingham, where I offer both an off the shelf and bespoke commission service in addition to felt making workshops.
