Lisa Lane is a Welsh independent jewellery designer maker, specialising in creating unique contemporary jewellery using traditional jewellery techniques.
Lisa studied a BA in Design Crafts before transitioning to jewellery design and studying a Master of Arts in Metalwork and Jewellery design.
After eleven years of lecturing Three-dimensional design in further education, in 2022 Lisa decided to solely focus on her craft and develop her collections and unique style.
Inspired by organic aesthetic quality of organic forms, Lisa is developing her research through the unexpected patterns layers textures and repetition of shapes found within nature, using these as a source of inspiration to create drawings designs and prints to transfer and permanently etch on the surface of the piece using an acid etching process.
Acid etching is the process of adding a resist to silver where the acid corrodes away part of the metal to leave the image/design behind. Lisa often oxidise part of the silver to create contrast in her work between a highly polished surface and dark intricate detail of the acid etch. The images can be transferred from photographs of intricate textures/patterns of rock surfaces or created from sections of lino prints. These are then reversed onto the silver and placed into the acid for etching.
Lisa creates a variety of jewellery pieces from earrings, rings and necklaces using primarily recycled sterling silver. The intricate technique of granulation is another process Lisa is exploring, this is an ancient technique where small sections of silver are heated to create small silver granules which are then positioned carefully and soldered, creating a delicate organic finish.
Pieces are often framed with square silver wire and sections are oxidised to create contrast in the surface quality. Creating eye catching designs that are unique and have a contemporary aesthetic.
Organic layers and patterns primarily inspire Lisa's work; this leaves a lot of scope for inspiration whether it is from the pattern of a foxglove flower to the layers in an oyster shell, recently Lisa has been researching the natural build-up of texture on a rock surface, as a lot of her time is spent on the beautiful beaches of the Gower peninsular where she gathers inspiration.
Lisa's work has its own unique style and can be easily identified through its contemporary organic modern qualities.
Lisa Lane creates contemporary jewellery inspired by unexpected organic patterns layers textures and repitition. Lisa creates a variety of unique pieces from rings pendants necklaces and earrings, primarily in recycled sterling silver. All Lisa's pieces are made by hand in her home studio in Swansea South Wales, therefore no two pieces are the same due to the natue of the etching and granulation techniques used.
