Jack Durling is a Brighton based artist who creates hand built ceramic sculptures inspired by the phenomena of the natural world. Focusing on animals both individually and in congregation his work is celebratory of their character and stories. Notable for decorative embellishments with porcelain and lustres, conservation themes are touched upon in his work.
Jack's artistic process involves hand-building the sculptures using diverse techniques, guided by illustrations that come to life in clay and reflect his distinctive style.
As a child, Jack spent significant time in Dungeness, a place renowned for its untamed landscapes and rich textures. It was there that his fascination with wildlife took root, leading to the development of textural contrasts as a recognizable hallmark of his work. Today lives nears the borders of the Southdowns National Park and is inspired equally by what is on his doorstep to the more exotic and endagered wildlife across the world.
Textures and the alchemy of ceramic techniques are a continuing source of inspiration for Jack, reminiscent of his childhood memories of Dungeness a place full of texture and wild beauty. It is here where he observed birds and other native wildlife.
Showing nationally at reputable galleries and shows Jack has also been involved in prestigious exhibitions and is a finalist for the David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the year 2022 for his Penguin Colony. He also completed his permanent public sculpture in his hometown of Maidstone in the summer of 2022. His work has also been featured in both this coming season and past season of The Great British Pottery Throw Down. Jack also teaches annual residential courses at West Dean College of Art Conservation and other institutions.
