I'm Claire Gaudion, a basket maker weaving traditional Guernsey willow baskets, including ponier à cous, courges and crab pots.
This heritage craft has been in my family for generations, and I have been weaving ponier à cous for many years, as taught by my Dad, Max Gaudion. Fascinated by the craft and the material, but also triggered by Dad’s remarks about how few people knew how to make these traditional Guernsey baskets now, one day I decided to have a go myself and made my first ponier à cou. That was about twenty years ago!
Guernsey ponier à cous were traditionally used for fishing or foraging for ormers on the shoreline. Ormers are a Guernsey shellfish delicacy which may only be gathered from January to April, at the full or new moon, and the following two days.
I work from my home near the Hampshire - Wiltshire border. I sell direct to customers and through independent stockists and demonstrate at events, run workshops and teach in the UK and Guernsey.
I am a member of Heritage Crafts and the Basketmakers’ Association.
