Explaining the Value of Craft
Hello,
I think there is no better way of explaining the value of craft than by watching a maker at work.
We've invited some incredible makers to demonstrate their craft at Craft Festival Cheltenham. We've invited makers of ceramics, letterpress printing, stitch, knitting, basket weaving, millinery and wood carving.
One of our demonstrators is William Barsley, a wood carver from Devon. We've asked William to choose his 5 Favourites. Read on to discover more.

William Barsley
William's latest project is a unique partnership with Westminster Hall within The Houses of Parliament. Carved by hand from the finest English Oak, William has produced exquisite, unique scale replicas of one of the 26 angels that decorate the medieval hammerbeam roof of Westminster Hall, the oldest part of the Palace of Westminster. These sculptures are now available for sale via the Houses of Parliament Shop and are made to order Read on to discover his 5 favourites.
I’m excited to be demonstrating alongside the Letterpress collective again. I was inspired by Nick and Ellen’s knowledge and passion for their craft after meeting them at the Bovey Tracey show earlier this year.
These look like exceptional knives. Working with sharp chisels every day gives me a huge appreciation of the skill that goes into metal work. I’m looking forward to seeing Two Stick Forge and getting some sharpening advice.
I can watch willow weaving for hours, mesmerised by the process, so I’m really looking forward to seeing Hatton Willow demonstrate and asking for some tips
Knowing how difficult it can be to work with clay, I am blown away by the designs of Jo Davies Ceramics. The forms and unique designs are a joy to see.
The attention to detail of Jane’s work is stunning, so it will be wonderful to see her work up close at the Craft Festival. I love the bold colours and designs
The Demonstration Room
We have more demonstrators than ever this year at Cheltenham. Throughout the weekend, members of the Gloucestershire Guild and invited makers will be showing and talking about how they make their work.
